In the spring of 1999, eight UCLA students began working towards the creation of the first South Asian male fraternity in California. After months of hard work and dedication, UCLA recognized Beta Chi Theta as an official fraternity on June 2nd, 1999 and granted it membership into the Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC). With the same zeal apparent in its creation, Beta Chi Theta has expanded beyond UCLA to include chapters at Baylor University, California State Polytechnics University at Pomona, University of Oklahoma at Norman, UCR, UCSD, University of Texas- Austin, Vanderbilt, Purdue, and Florida Atlantic University, while also creating a network with other South Asian male fraternities across the United States.

Primarily, Beta Chi Theta was founded on the principle of Brotherhood. In the fraternity, brothers create friendships and bonds that will last throughout college and beyond. The sense of brotherhood Beta Chi Theta instills upon its members will help young men in all facets of life, not just the fraternity. Along with brotherhood, Beta Chi Theta develops among its brothers the principles of tradition, leadership and service to humanity. Beta Chi Theta also strives to promote South Asian culture, achieve academic excellence and create a unified nationwide network.

Beta Chi Theta was created out of the need for a male South Asian fraternity on the West Coast. While there are fraternities in California that provide students of Asian, African, and Hispanic descent the opportunity to interact with other students of similar beliefs and culture, there are none for South Asian male students. This fraternity provides an atmosphere where students can share and preserve their culture while creating a network of support across the country.

Since it's official inception Beta Chi Theta has made numerous strides in establishing itself as one of the leading student organizations amongst the South Asian community. Since June 2, 1999, Beta Chi Theta has grown from a vision that eight young men had to a student organization that is committed to actively maintaining and promoting South Asian culture at UCLA to a nationwide presence with more than 500 brothers.
